The Brief

Ellie Gill is a flower grower and artisanal dyer creating one of a kind textiles and bespoke pieces using traditional methods and natural fibres. Her process is slow, sustainable and gentle on the earth. Each piece she creates is a work of art – a delicate painterly impression, imbued with the life and colour of her garden.

Based in Sussex, Ellie creates her natural dyes from foraged plants and flowers that she has grown herself in a dedicated biodynamic dye garden. Using time-honoured processes, her approach is completely natural, slow and sustainable. She is passionate about working in harmony with nature, in celebrating the changing palette through the seasons, and creating a connection to nature through her work.

At the heart of Ellie’s brand is a sense of creating a personal connection between the customer and nature. We agreed on the impact that the brand needed to have through a strategic process to determine the clarity and essence of the business, and then distilled this down into three key words: cherished, natural and luxurious. The moodboard below captures the feeling and mood of the brand.

We wanted the brand to capture the artisanal, hand-crafted process of Ellie’s dye process and the painterly quality of the botanical dyes. Ellie uses her natural-dyed textiles to create meditation cushions, clothes, eye pillows, kimonos and other accessories, and each piece is imbued with colours of her garden. This sense of connection to nature, and of slow fashion items that are designed to be cherished, created the foundation of the brand.

I wanted the brand to feel feminine, gentle and natural so I created custom hand-drawn illustrations of natural flowers and leaves, and a watercolour brand texture to support the logo design. Custom elements like this aren’t right for every brand, but they can really add a special touch and personality to an overall brand identity. Brand textures and illustrations can be used on packaging, social media templates and also integrated into the website design.
